The ambassadors of the member states of the European Union unanimously approved, on October 7, nearly 1,600 new sanctions against individuals and entities associated with Russia’s military-industrial complex.
The measures are set to be officially adopted by the EU Foreign Ministers, meeting on October 12th in Luxembourg. The new list targets companies and organizations in fields such as shipbuilding, aviation, electronics, armored vehicle repair, and the aerospace sector, announces Kyiv Independent.
The list, consulted and previously presented by Kyiv Independent on September 21, targets a wide range of actors in Russia’s defense industry, from shipyards and aviation companies to electronics manufacturers, units specializing in armored vehicle repair, and companies in the aerospace sector.
This is the largest unique list of new sanctions presented for analysis at the level of the European Union. With the new measures, the total number of individuals and entities sanctioned by the EU in connection with Russia’s war against Ukraine currently reaches approximately 3,000. After adopting the current package, the European Union intends to adopt a more flexible approach regarding sanctions against Russia.
Instead of comprehensive packages, which encompass a very large number of measures, the EU intends to continuously adopt smaller lists of sanctions. In practice, this change has already begun to be implemented. In recent weeks, the European Union has adopted separate decisions sanctioning Russian citizens involved in actions deemed by European authorities as attempts to hinder the participation of the opposition party “Yabloko” in parliamentary elections, in the abduction of Ukrainian children, and in spreading propaganda in Europe.
