The Republic of Moldova has taken another significant step towards joining the European Union. The 27 member states of the EU have unanimously adopted the common negotiating position for the official opening of the first group of chapters – “Fundamental Values”.
The decision confirms the recognition of the reforms implemented and the progress made by our country, as well as the confidence of the European Union member states in the Republic of Moldova and its citizens.
The Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov noted on her Facebook page that the next step will take place on June 15th, in Luxembourg, where the second Intergovernmental Conference Moldova – European Union will be held. “This stage marks the beginning of negotiations on the ‘Fundamental Values’ cluster, which includes key areas such as the rule of law, justice, fundamental rights and the functioning of democratic institutions,” wrote the official.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, stated that the opening of the first negotiation chapter for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine represents a “major step forward” for the European Union. According to the official, the cluster concerning fundamental aspects, which is set to be opened at the Intergovernmental Conference in Luxembourg, constitutes the “backbone of the accession process”, as it includes the basic values and principles upon which the European Union is built, from the rule of law to strong democratic institutions.
“Expansion is a strategic choice. By bringing our nations closer together, we strengthen peace, security, and prosperity across the entire European continent”, declared Ursula von der Leyen.
Immediately after the announcement of the decision, Maia Sandu and the President of the EU Council, Antonio Costa, had a phone conversation.
“I welcome the decision to open the first cluster of accession negotiations on Monday. Moldova is ready to open all — we have done the work and will continue to implement reforms. I look forward to the EU-Moldova summit on June 22,” the president conveyed after the conversation.
