The EU-UK summit scheduled for next month will be postponed, announced the President of the European Council, following the resignation of the British Prime Minister. António Costa expressed hope that Keir Starmer’s successor as Prime Minister will ensure the “continuity” of plans to revive relations between the two sides of the English Channel.

The meeting was set to take place on July 22 to conclude negotiations on an agri-food agreement, an agreement on the marketing of emission quotas, and a mobility program for young people.

The United Kingdom also wished to use this meeting as a starting point to expand discussions on the UK’s approach to the EU’s economic orbit, the details of any plan to be confirmed during the meeting.

Starmer’s successor, who is presumed to be the regional mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham, could take over the position as early as July 17 or 18, if there is no race for the party leadership.
