“The chief of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, warned European leaders on Monday not to participate in Vladimir Putin’s May 9 parade and invited them to show solidarity with Ukraine instead, Politico reports. Kallas added that the European Union does not want to see any potential member of the bloc, referencing Serbia, participate in Putin’s parade. According to Russian media, Putin’s regime has sent invitations to leaders from China, India, Brazil, and a EU country, Slovakia. Serbia is also on the list of invitations, as it is a candidate for joining the European bloc. “What was clearly discussed and what was said by different member states is that any participation in the May 9 parade or any celebration in Moscow will not be viewed favorably by Europe, given the fact that Russia is waging a large-scale war on the continent,” Kallas said at a press conference during a ministerial meeting in Luxembourg.Kallas also added that the European Union does not want to see any potential member of the bloc participate in Putin’s parade. The May 9 event is held annually in Moscow and this year marks the 80th anniversary of Victory Day in World War II and the defeat of Nazi Germany. Putin has falsely and absurdly claimed that his war against Ukraine is an “anti-Nazi” war.The cabinet of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban confirmed that the Hungarian leader will not participate in Putin’s celebration. In contrast, Robert Fico stated in November that he would attend. European leaders invited to a “diplomatic show of force”
The government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invited high-ranking European leaders to Kiev on May 9 to participate in a “diplomatic show of force” against Vladimir Putin, the day when the Kremlin traditionally organizes the annual military parade for Victory Day in World War II. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Zybukh sent this invitation to his European counterparts on Monday during a meeting in Luxembourg, urging them to “show our unity and determination in the face of the greatest aggression in Europe since World War II.” This effort to divert attention from Moscow comes over three years after Putin launched a large-scale invasion against Ukraine, and after American President Donald Trump attempted to obtain a ceasefire with the aggressor state.
