The European Commission proposes a reform of the European Union’s enlargement process, as the community bloc must prepare for a future with over 30 member states. The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, presented on Tuesday, August 25, at the Croatian Ambassadors Conference in Zagreb, the main directions of the new approach.

Kos described the moment as a new “Helsinki moment,” referring to the expansion of the Union after the Cold War, when ten states joined the community block. In his opinion, geopolitical changes also require the transformation of the expansion process.

“The world has changed. And the expansion process must adapt to these changes,” Commissioner Marta Kos stated on Tuesday.

    Reforming the decision-making process

One of the proposed directions aims at internal reforms that would make the European Union more flexible and efficient in times of crisis. According to Marta Kos, certain changes could be made without altering the European treaties, reports Euronews.

Among the proposed ideas are reducing the areas where a single member state can block the decisions of other countries, and even reducing the size of some European institutions.

Kos indicated the mechanism of consolidated cooperation, currently used, among other things, for projects such as the euro zone and the Schengen area, as a model that could allow groups of states to progress more quickly.
