The European Parliament (EP) on Tuesday asked EU member states to continue the procedure of withdrawing Hungary’s voting rights in the Council of the European Union, citing the “collapse of democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights” in this country led by conservative Prime Minister Viktor Orban, whom they accuse of being at the helm of a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy”, reports the EFE agency.

In the resolution voted by MEPs, with 415 votes in favor, 193 against, and 28 abstentions, they condemn what they call the “deliberate and systematic efforts of the Hungarian government to undermine the fundamental values of the EU”, about which they state that “are not an optional choice, but a fundamental commitment freely undertaken” by each EU member state.

“For too long, European governments have stood by while an increasingly autocratic government has destroyed the fundamental rights and freedoms of citizens,” accuses MEP Tineke Strik, a member of the Greens group and initiator of the resolution.
