The European Parliament voted on Tuesday to lift the immunity of the far-right Polish MEP Grzegorz Braun, thus allowing the commencement of legal proceedings in Poland for statements that deny the Holocaust, reports France Presse, according to Agerpres.
Known for his antisemitic statements, Grzegorz Braun is the president of the Confederation of the Polish Crown (KKP), one of the two far-right formations represented in the lower house of the Polish parliament (Sejm). The other far-right party represented in the Sejm is the Confederation.
With just over a year until the legislative elections in Poland, KKP is credited with approximately 8% of the voting intentions, while the Confederation would obtain over 13% of the votes. If these scores were to materialize at the polls, the two parties could play an essential role in forming the government.
The lifting of Braun’s immunity follows a request submitted to the European Parliament in February 2026 by the Polish General Prosecutor’s Office, accusing him of denying the Holocaust and the existence of gas chambers in the Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau camp during a radio broadcast in 2025.
According to Polish law, the public denial of Nazi crimes, war crimes, and other offenses against peace and humanity is punishable by imprisonment for up to three years.
The vote in the European Parliament does not imply Braun’s guilt, but it allows the Polish judicial authorities to continue their investigation or to initiate a court procedure.
