The European Parliament adopted, on Wednesday, a definitive ban on all imports of Russian natural gas into the European Union starting “at the latest” in the fall of 2027. The action aims to deprive Russia of the resources to finance the War in Ukraine. “We are still paying almost 40 million euros a day to Russia and we are still financing the massacres in Ukraine,” said the rapporteur of the text, Inese Vaidere, reports AFP.
The European Parliament adopted this text with a large majority, which is necessary to obtain a final green light from the member states of the European Union (EU), with a qualified majority, usually being a formality.
“Abandoning Russian natural gas is a great success of the European Union. A truly historic gesture,” said the rapporteur of the text, MEP Inese Vaidere, on Tuesday.
“Since the large-scale war began in February 2022, the European Union has paid over 216 billion euros for Russian fossil energy. We are still paying almost 40 million euros a day to Russia and we are still financing the massacres in Ukraine,” she continued.
