Prosecutors from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO), led by Laura Codruța Kovesi, have opened an investigation into the use of European funds by companies previously owned by the current Czech populist Prime Minister Andrej Babis, reports the news website Seznam Zpravy on Tuesday, according to TVPWorld.
Andrej Babis, aged 71, has built a business empire with companies in various fields, including agriculture, food, chemical industry, and other industries, among which is also the Agrofert group, comprising hundreds of companies and accessing European funds of tens of millions of euros annually.
After returning to the helm of the government at the end of last year, Babis transferred the shares he held in Agrofert to an independent trust fund and insisted that this decision of his even exceeds the requirements imposed by Czech and European regulations regarding conflicts of interest.
