Bulgaria will become the first member state of the European Union to introduce a support scheme dedicated to large energy-consuming industries, as part of measures intended to offset the impact of the energy crisis caused by the war in Iran, reports Reuters, according to Agerpres.

Speaking at the cabinet meeting in Sofia, the Minister of Energy, Traicho Traikov, announced that the scheme, submitted for approval to the European Union, is expected to be launched “in two to three weeks”.

According to the plan, the Government will reimburse 50% of the additional electricity costs when market prices exceed 63 euros per megawatt-hour (MW), the measure being applied retroactively, from July 1, 2025.

“The regulated electricity rates for households remain unchanged, and the current price levels do not represent an immediate cause for concern,” explained Traikov, adding that “it is a matter of precaution,” citing Bulgaria’s high domestic energy production.
