A powerful explosion, followed by a fire, occurred on Tuesday at a petrochemical factory in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. As a result of the incident, at least two people lost their lives, and several dozen were injured, reports Moscow Times.

The explosion occurred at the Nizhnekamskneftekhim complex, the largest producer of synthetic rubber and plastic materials in Russia. The factory is located in the industrial city of Nizhnekamsk, approximately 170 kilometers east of Kazan.

Representatives of the Sibur group, the owner of the complex, specified that the tragedy was most likely caused by an “equipment malfunction”. The company also announced that the injured personnel are receiving emergency medical care and that the entire unit was evacuated immediately after the incident.
