The former Attorney General of Georgia, Otar Romanov-Partzhaladze, has established in Russia an international “volunteer” unit, named “Gheorghievski”, intended for participation in the war against Ukraine, writes “Evropeiska pravda”.

The former Georgian dignitary, under sanctions imposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine, declared that he voluntarily decided to fight on Russia’s side in the Russo-Ukrainian war.

Romanov-Parțhaladze himself will lead the new “Gheorghievski” unit

He pointed out that the name of the group refers to the Treaty of Georgievsk of 1783, through which the Georgian kingdom of Kartli-Kakheti came under the protectorate of the Russian Empire.

Otar Parțhaladze held the position of Attorney General of Georgia from November to December 2013. In 2023, the United States imposed sanctions on him, justifying the decision by “amplifying Russian influence in Georgia”. According to the press, although he lives in Moscow and maintains ties with the Russian political elite, he continues to keep close contacts with the government formed by the pro-Russian party “Georgian Dream” from Tbilisi.

After the imposition of American sanctions, the then president of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, stripped the former attorney general of his Georgian citizenship, at which point he changed his name to Partzhaladze-Romanov.

In 2024, Ukraine, in turn, imposed sanctions against the former Attorney General of Georgia.
