Following drone and cruise missile attacks, Kiev is preparing to add a ballistic missile to its arsenal that will be much harder to intercept by Russia’s air defense, say former and current officials quoted by CBS News and Politico.

Ukraine will be able to launch attacks with domestically manufactured ballistic missiles within three to six months, stated the former defense minister, Mihailo Fedorov, in an interview given to CBS News.

Until now, Ukraine has relied on cheap long-range drones and cruise missiles to launch deep attacks into Russian territory, but these weapons are slower and easier to shoot down once detected.

By comparison, Russia frequently uses ballistic missiles against Ukraine, which so far has had difficulties intercepting them.

In June, Fire Point, one of the largest defense equipment manufacturers in Ukraine, tested a ballistic missile, which, in theory, would allow Ukraine to respond to long-range Russian attacks.
