Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to promote the development of a new generation of strategic weapons that the Kremlin presents as capable of changing the global military balance.
Among the systems under development or already tested are autonomous nuclear torpedoes, hypersonic missiles, nuclear propulsion weapons, and space technologies that Western officials warn could threaten the global satellite infrastructure.
Security analysts say that the new programs reflect a profound deterioration of the international armament control architecture, in a context where many of the treaties between Washington and Moscow have been suspended or abandoned, writes Daily Mail.
Poseidon: autonomous nuclear torpedo
One of the most controversial projects is the Poseidon system, described by Russian authorities as a submarine drone with nuclear propulsion and strategic capability.
According to official Kremlin statements, the device could traverse thousands of kilometers underwater before detonating near enemy coasts.

The Russian state press maintains that the explosion could generate large-scale radioactive waves against cities and naval bases. However, many Western experts believe that these scenarios are exaggerated or scientifically impossible to verify.
However, analysts assert that the main purpose of the system is psychological and strategic deterrence. The former Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, previously described Poseidon as an “apocalyptic weapon”. Russia has also recently unveiled the Habarovsk nuclear submarine, specially built for the transportation of the Poseidon system.
