The futuristic missile defense system proposed by American President Donald Trump, titled “Golden Dome”, will cost approximately 1.200 trillion dollars over the course of two decades, according to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).
The advanced figure from the bipartisan institution significantly exceeds the initial sum of 175 billion dollars envisaged by the administration. Moreover, the report warns that the technology, designed to protect the USA against ballistic and cruise missiles, could be vulnerable to a large-scale attack from Russia or China.
Massive costs and technical vulnerabilities
According to the CBO, acquisition costs alone amount to over one trillion dollars. These include layers of interceptors and a complex space warning and tracking system for missiles.
Although President Trump presented the project as a definitive solution against “next generation” aerial threats, experts remain skeptical.
The report emphasizes that the system could be “overwhelmed” by a massive attack launched by an adversary with similar military capabilities (peer adversary).
There are major doubts regarding the feasibility of a shield that could cover a territorial mass as vast as that of the United States.
Officials warn that current systems have not kept pace with the increasingly sophisticated weapons developed by potential adversaries.
