A reputable specialist in the economy of Eastern European countries publishes a complex analysis of the military aid situation provided by the US to Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion. Anders Åslund is a senior researcher at the Stockholm Free World Forum and adjunct professor at Georgetown University. Throughout his career, he has advised both the Russian and Ukrainian governments.
Åslund has drafted an analysis for the Kyiv Post, in which he presents behind-the-scenes details about the negotiations conducted in the US to determine the military aid provided to Ukraine.
The expert summarizes the history of US-Ukraine-Russia relations in the last three decades, highlighting the enormous mistakes made by all the presidents installed in Washington during this period.
“After two years of a bloody war caused by Russia in Ukraine, the United States, as the only superpower and main supplier of weapons to Ukraine, must reevaluate its actions.
Ukraine successfully stopped Russia’s invasion, but failed to free the people under Russian occupation. The West could have done much more. It is time to question what went wrong and what should be done in addition. The United States needs to articulate a clear strategy regarding Ukraine and Russia.
Why did it withhold the most important strategic weapons and instead slowly supply the Ukrainian army? This cost the lives of thousands of men and women. Why did the United States not send reserves of weapons, so that Ukraine could have won quickly in 2023? Why allow the Russians time to build their defenses?
