The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee has decided to lift the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, in effect since October 2023. The decision came into effect on July 7, 2026.
According to the IOC, the measure was taken after the Russian Olympic Committee excluded from its composition the regional sports organizations from the territories under the jurisdiction of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine. The Russian side also confirmed that it does not and will not carry out activities in these territories.
However, the IOC has reserved the right to reintroduce restrictions if it deems necessary.
At the same time, the International Olympic Committee has cancelled the recommendations addressed to international sports federations regarding the limitation of Russian athletes’ participation in competitions. After the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, in February 2022, the IOC had recommended the exclusion of athletes from Russia and Belarus from international tournaments.
Subsequently, Belarusian athletes were allowed to participate under a neutral status, and by May 2026, the restrictions against Belarus were completely lifted. Now, the restrictive recommendations have also been withdrawn in the case of Russia.
