The leader of AfD, the German far-right party, Alice Weidel stated in an interview for ZDF, that a government led by her party would aim for Germany’s withdrawal from both the Eurozone and the Schengen area, would close the country’s borders and would impose a much tougher policy in the field of migration. The extremist and pro-Russian formation continues to rise in polls and could gain control of a state government for the first time, following the September elections.

In an interview given to the German station ZDF, Weidel also promised the closure of Germany’s borders and argued that the country’s economy was stronger before the adoption of the single currency.

Weidel reaffirmed AfD’s commitment to leaving the eurozone and said she still supports this position, included in the party’s program for the federal elections.

“Germany was significantly better off before the introduction of the euro,” she said.

Weidel described the euro as an unstable and weakened currency, and linked this to what she called the widespread impoverishment of the working population.

She argued that Germany no longer benefits from the advantages of a strong currency and that the depreciation of the euro has led to wealth losses for ordinary Germans.
