The investigation against the Hungarian European Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi, a close associate of the incumbent Prime Minister Viktor Orban, regarding alleged espionage actions within European institutions is almost completed, announced Tuesday the European Commission, according to AFP reported by Agerpres.

The results of this investigation, launched by the European Commission in October, could soon be presented to the European Parliament.

The European executive has remained extremely discreet on this matter so far, for fear that it could be exploited by the nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban in the parliamentary election campaign, which he lost on Sunday to the pro-European Peter Magyar.

“I can confirm that progress has been made in the investigation and the European Parliament will be informed by the Commission “as soon as all administrative procedures have been completed,” said a community spokesperson, Balazs Ujvari, on Tuesday.

Several European media institutions reported last October that Viktor Orban’s Hungary had tried between 2012 and 2018 to put pressure on its citizens employed by European institutions to carry out espionage operations.
