A high-ranking Russian general, previously appreciated by the Moscow leadership, but challenged by his own soldiers for his harsh tactics, was removed from his position after four years spent in key command positions in the war in Ukraine.

This is about Lieutenant General Suhrab Ahmedov, 51 years old, originally from Dagestan, whose dismissal was initially signaled by Russian mil-blog type channels, close to the Kremlin. The information was subsequently taken over by the independent Russian press and Ukrainian sources, although the Russian Ministry of Defense did not officially confirm the change.

A rapid career in the army

Ahmedov was considered a rising officer. His military career began in the ’90s, within the elite units of the Russian naval infantry. Before the large-scale invasion of Ukraine, he had not accumulated combat experience in external conflicts such as Syria, but he commanded the 155 Marine Infantry Brigade, one of the units considered elite of the Russian army.

In February 2022, Ahmedov was directly involved in Russia’s initial offensive on Kiev, part of the plan to quickly force a change in Ukrainian leadership. The first criticisms of him appeared in the spring of that year, when units under his command were sent in repeated attacks against well-fortified Ukrainian positions, suffering significant losses.
