Russia has welcomed the news that Ukrainian leader Volodimir Zelenski has dismissed the young reformer Mihail Fedorov from his position as Minister of Defense. Moscow expects this to improve Russia’s position in the war, writes Dialog

One of the largest Z channels in Russia, “Military Informant”, mentioned that Fedorov was “responsible” for the Russian army’s blocking of the Starlink satellite communication system.

“This has caused significant problems (to the Russian occupying army – ed.). Therefore, it is more likely that his resignation represents a positive development for Russia”, noted the Russian propaganda publication.

Another Z channel, “Osveditel”, did not hide its joy either.

“Little is known about the new Minister of Defense, but the fact that Zelensky has removed such a prolific and dangerous figure from his leadership is a very good thing. Especially considering that his resignation will most likely also lead to a purge of Fedorov’s people from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense”, wrote the Russian Z channel.

The President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, dismissed the Minister of Defense, Mihailo Fedorov, as part of a broad government reshuffle, despite calls from Western partners and civil society, who demanded his retention in office.

In the six months spent leading the Ministry of Defense, Fedorov has been credited with reforming the institution, improving the military procurement system, and reducing the level of corruption. His term also coincided with a period in which the Ukrainian army intensified long-range drone attacks on Russian oil refineries, affecting energy infrastructure and causing fuel shortages in several regions.

The removal of Fedorov has provoked strong reactions both in Ukraine and among Western partners. The decision also comes against the backdrop of information about possible tensions between the former minister and the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, General Oleksandr Sîrski.
