Ghenadi Ziuganov, the veteran leader of the Communist Party in Russia, has warned the Moscow Parliament that the country’s economic deterioration risks triggering a revolution similar to that of 1917.

He asked the government to urgently take measures to remedy the situation, Agerpres reported on Wednesday, citing Reuters.

Ziuganov, aged 81, issued the warning during a plenary session of the State Duma, in view of the parliamentary elections scheduled for September in the Russian Federation.

\”We do everything we can to support (President) Vladimir Putin, as well as his strategy and policies, but you (the government) do not listen to us,\” he declared on Tuesday, according to a recording of his speech published on the official website of the Duma, reports Agerpres.

\”If the government does not urgently adopt financial, economic, and other measures, we can expect a repeat of what happened in 1917 by the fall. We have no right to repeat that. Let’s make some decisions!\”, he appealed to the executive led by Prime Minister Mihail Mishustin.

The communist leader commented and stated that a recent meeting of the Russian government, convened by the president, was “the gloomiest” in recent times.

Ziuganov’s speech was met with applause and attentively listened to by Viaceslav Volodin, the president of the lower house of the Federal Parliament and a close ally of Putin.
