The sudden slowdown of the Russian economy and its division between a growing military sector and a declining civil one have led to a significant increase in income inequality among the population, according to a report by Rosstat on the socio-economic situation.

The Gini coefficient, an indicator that reflects income concentration (the smaller it is, the more equal the income distribution), reached 0.419 last year — the highest level since 2010. In 2024 it was 0.41, and the increase in the last year is the largest in the entire observation period that began in 1995.

The report was published on Wednesday, but the next day these data disappeared from the document. Even the remaining information confirms that income inequality has increased in the last year.

In particular, the gap between the incomes of the richest and the poorest has widened. The so-called “funds coefficient” — the ratio of the incomes of the richest 10% to those of the poorest 10% — reached 15.8 times, compared to 15.5 in 2024. The level recorded last year is the highest since 2018.
