The European Parliament voted on Wednesday in favor of a ‘military Schengen space’, by eliminating internal borders for troop and military equipment movements within the European Union and by modernizing railway and road networks, tunnels and bridges, according to Agerpres.

The resolution voted by the EP calls for the organization of regular joint exercises and stress tests to identify and remove obstacles. In addition, MEPs want the European Union to follow NATO’s example and ensure that rapid reaction forces can cross EU internal borders within 72 hours in peacetime and within 24 hours in a crisis situation.

“To maintain Europe’s power and ability to deter aggressors, it is essential to demonstrate our readiness to act. This includes having the ability to rapidly deploy troops and equipment within the EU. Overcoming administrative obstacles and developing dual-use infrastructure are not a luxury, but a necessity”, stated co-rapporteur Petras Austrevicius.

The resolution was adopted in the EP plenary with 493 votes in favor, 127 votes against, and 38 abstentions.
