The face of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in Saxony-Anhalt is a young, sociable politician well-liked by voters. However, the action plan of the far-right party in this eastern state stands out as one of the most radical among all the regional branches of the party.

    • Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD politician with a hardline nationalist, anti-immigration, and pro-Russian rhetoric, could become the premier of Saxony-Anhalt, if the party wins the regional governance in the elections on September 6.
    • In a recent headline that sparked controversy, Der Spiegel magazine named him “the most dangerous man in Germany”.
    • Erik Vollmann, a political scientist at the Technical University of Dresden, tells HotNews that he doesn’t necessarily agree with the magazine’s title, but makes a series of important observations about the rising German politician.

A provocative title and the controversies that followed

The leader of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the regional elections of September 6 in Saxony-Anhalt, Ulrich Siegmund, is one of the assets of the far-right party in its attempt to reach the governance of the eastern state.

According to the latest polls, which place AfD at 42% of voting intentions, Siegmund, a 35-year-old politician, could become the first representative of the party to lead a German state, a prospect that causes concern in Berlin.

In the middle of August, the center-left oriented magazine Der Spiegel featured Siegmund on its cover, with the provocative title “The most dangerous man in Germany” and a picture reminiscent of the “Most Wanted” section.

The declared intention was to warn about the consequences of an AfD victory in this state on the entire country.
