The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has launched a strong critique against the war initiated by the United States and Israel against Iran, which he considers illegal and avoidable. At the same time, the German leader warns that Donald Trump’s return to the White House has caused a deep rupture in transatlantic relations.

The President of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, stated on Tuesday that the war started at the end of February against Iran by the United States and Israel represents a “disastrous mistake” and a violation of international law, according to News.ro.

A former foreign minister and vice chancellor in the governments led by Angela Merkel, Steinmeier spoke openly during a speech held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, adopting a more decisive stance than the current chancellor, Friedrich Merz.

“Our foreign policy does not gain credibility just because we do not qualify a violation of international law as a violation of international law”, he said. “We must address this issue regarding the war in Iran. Because, in my opinion, this war is contrary to international law.”

Steinmeier also questioned the justification invoked for the attack, namely the existence of an imminent danger to American targets, stating that he has “almost no doubt” that this argument “will not hold up”.

Deep rupture in relations with the USA

The German leader believes that Donald Trump’s return to the White House, in January 2025, marks a major change in foreign policy, comparable to the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

“Just as I believe there will be no return to relations with Russia before February 24, 2022, I also believe there will be no return to transatlantic relations before January 20, 2025”, Steinmeier declared.
