Andrej Babis, the populist Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, harshly criticized the intelligence services on Monday for informing him too late about a disinformation campaign aimed at creating animosity between Czechs and Poles, reports the DPA agency, cited by Agerpres.
“I should have had this information much earlier,” Babis declared after a cabinet meeting. He said that the Foreign Intelligence Service has “failed.”
The incident was triggered by an online campaign intended to create the impression that Poland wants to annex a part of Czech territory. For this purpose, unknown individuals created fake versions of some Czech television websites and a fake profile of the Czech ambassador on social media.
The DPA news agency notes that security experts suspect a professional operation, but it is not yet known whether Russia was behind it.
Both the Czech Republic and Poland are NATO members and have been strong supporters of Ukraine following the invasion initiated by Vladimir Putin in February 2022. However, Babis has promised a dramatic reduction in assistance to Ukraine both before and after his return to power in December last year.
Andrej Babis finally responded to the new disinformation campaign by redistributing a message from the Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on the “X” platform, which clearly conveyed that the two countries are loyal allies.
