On September 9, the European Court of Justice rejected a request to lift the sanctions imposed on Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. The restrictive measures aim at freezing assets and prohibiting entry and transit through the EU.

Abramovici contested the EU Council’s decisions to extend restrictive measures and demanded compensation for damages, writes realitatea.md. The Court confirmed the Council’s decisions and considered the criteria for applying sanctions to be proportional.

The court has previously rejected similar requests filed by Abramovich in 2023 and 2025, according to The Moscow Times. The businessman asserts that the sanctions against him were imposed due to his celebrity status.

The court dismissed this argument, invoking the list of values held by the oligarch and the shares he has in his portfolio, as well as the allegations about his ties with the Kremlin administration and the deliveries made by companies affiliated with him to the Russian army.
