For the first time in a long while, the sales of food products in Russia have begun to decrease in volume — that is, in physical units: pieces, kilograms, liters.

According to Kommersant, which cites data provided by the company Taxcom, in the months of September–October 2025, the decline was 5% compared to the same period of the previous year and affected the majority of product categories. Sales of milk fell by 8%, rice by 10%, and buckwheat and pork — by 9%.

In terms of value, retail trade continues to grow, but only as a result of rising prices. Since the beginning of 2024, the price of beef has increased by 26%, milk by 25%, rye bread by 24%, and potatoes by 38%.

The consequence? The shopping basket becomes more expensive, but the actual number of purchases from supermarkets is decreasing — by 2% in the period from January to September, according to calculations by T-Pay. In particular, the population has begun to significantly economize on meat: the number of purchases from butchers has decreased by 7% compared to last year, according to data from Evotor.
