31 foreign citizens who have exceeded the legal term of stay in the United States have entered the Republic of Moldova since the beginning of the year 2026. The information was communicated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
According to the institution, 27 of them have already left the country, reports newsmaker.md. Another four are still on the territory of Moldova, and one person has sought asylum.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that all 31 individuals are citizens of states from the former Soviet space, with which the Republic of Moldova has a visa-free regime for short stays. As of September 10, there were still two Georgian citizens and two Russian citizens in the country.
The citizenship of the person who applied for asylum has not been publicly announced.
We recall that, in 2025, news had emerged that Donald Trump would want to deport illegal immigrants to the Republic of Moldova as well. CBS News reported that the USA would want to conclude agreements to this effect with our country.
The former Prime Minister, Dorin Recean, pointed out then that the authorities in Chisinau will only receive in Moldova our country’s citizens who have been expelled from the USA.
