The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, stated on Friday that he wishes for his country, neighboring the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, to participate in Western nuclear deterrence against Russia. The official suggested that nuclear weapons could be deployed on the country’s territory.

The measure would impose a revision of the Constitution, and the process has already been initiated, writes hotnews.ro.

“It’s about my country’s objective to utilize all opportunities for nuclear deterrence and we want to be an integral part of this nuclear deterrence. A few days ago, we proposed a constitutional amendment to eliminate the existing restriction on a possible deployment of nuclear weapons in Lithuania,” announced Nauseda.

Just last Friday, a group of 50 Lithuanian parliamentarians confirmed that they had officially registered a constitutional amendment project to this effect. The revision of the Lithuanian Constitution requires approval in parliament twice with a two-thirds majority (94 out of 141 members), with a gap of at least three months between votes.

Lithuania’s initiative comes three weeks after the Finnish parliament voted to lift the total ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons on its territory.
