Pentagon officials say it’s the first time since World War II that the US has destroyed an enemy ship using a torpedo.

At least 80 people have died after the Iranian ship IRIS Dena sank on Wednesday in the Indian Ocean, near Sri Lanka, following a torpedo attack launched by a United States Navy submarine. According to American officials, this is the first case in which the United States sinks an enemy ship with a torpedo since World War II.

The American Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, stated that the Iranian vessel was hit by a Mk-48 torpedo, one of the most powerful weapons in the arsenal of American submarines, which he called “Silent Death”, a weapon capable of quickly destroying a surface ship.

“In the Indian Ocean, an American submarine sank an Iranian warship, which was believed to be safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo – Silent Death. This is the first sinking of an enemy ship with a torpedo since World War II. Just like in that war – when we were still the War Department – we fight to win,” Hegseth declared on Wednesday, March 4, at the Pentagon, where images of the attack were also presented.
