The new super-embassy of China in London could be used to spy on the whole of Europe, warned a security expert, in the context where unredacted plans obtained by The Telegraph revealed that Beijing intends to build a secret room next to sensitive communication cables, reports Daily Mail.

The unredacted plans of the construction would show a secret room in the north-west corner of the new embassy, just a little over a meter away from a vital network of fiber optic cables that transmit data from the financial districts City of London and Canary Wharf.

Anthony Glees, professor of information and security at the University of Buckingham, estimated that it would be an “absolute madness” to allow China to proceed with the project.

“You can see from the sketches how close the rooms are to those cables – they can be intercepted very easily,” he told Nick Ferrari from LBC. “There are also heating systems that can support large servers. In my opinion, it would not only serve to spy on the United Kingdom, but it would become China’s information center for the whole of Europe.”

Professor Glees also expressed his concern about the size of the complex, suggesting that it could be used to intimidate and detain critics; in this regard, he evoked an incident from 2022, when a democracy protester from Hong Kong was dragged into the Chinese consulate in Manchester and assaulted.
