German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated on Monday that the leaders of Iran are “humiliating” the United States in the conflict in the East. He accused Washington of not having a clear strategy.
“The Iranians are clearly stronger than expected, and the Americans also lack a truly convincing strategy in negotiations”, Merz stated during a visit to a school in Marsberg, a city in his native region of Sauerland.
The German official cited the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq as examples, according to Deutsche Welle.
“The problem with such conflicts is always the same: it’s not enough just to get in, you also need to know how to get out. We’ve seen this, painfully, for 20 years in Afghanistan. We’ve seen it in Iraq too.”
He argued that, at the present moment, American officials do not seem to have an exit strategy from this conflict.
“At this moment, I do not see what strategic exit the Americans will choose, especially since the Iranians negotiate very skillfully — or avoid negotiations just as skillfully,” he added.
Merz also said that “an entire nation is humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by the so-called Revolutionary Guard”.
The Chancellor emphasized that the complicated situation in the Middle East now has a strong negative economic impact on Germany.
“Currently, the situation is extremely complicated,” said Merz. “And it costs us a lot of money. This conflict, this war against Iran, has a direct impact on our economic production.”
