The Trump Administration has informed the American Congress that up to 5,000 Cuban citizens have participated in Russia’s military operations in Ukraine, according to an unclassified report from the State Department cited by Axios. At the same time, Havana is offering “diplomatic and political support to Moscow,” the document also states.
The USA essentially states outright that the Cuban regime is Russia’s accomplice through this contribution to the war with troops.
The report specifies that there are no clear public documents to confirm that the Cuban authorities officially sent all these combatants, however “significant indications” show that the regime “tolerated, allowed or selectively facilitated this flow”.
“The Cuban regime has failed to protect its citizens from being used as pawns in the war between Russia and Ukraine”, a spokesperson for the State Department stated.
The document, transmitted on April 8 to key committees in Congress, states that Cuban citizens represent “one of the most numerous identifiable groups of foreign fighters supporting Russian military operations in Ukraine“. Estimates based on data from open sources suggest that between 1,000 and 5,000 Cubans would participate in Russia’s military operations, while sources from Ukrainian intelligence services suggest that, in fact, the number of those directly deployed on the front would rather be closer to 10,000, the report also states.
