The American army has abruptly dismissed the general in charge of the corps involved in coordinating support for Ukraine. According to ABC News, Lieutenant General Charles Costanza, commander of the V Corps, was removed approximately two months before his term was due to end.

The army corps he led occupies a central role in the American military presence on the NATO front line with Russia. Costanza was in command of the Fifth Corps from April 2024, a structure partially dislocated in Poland, which has gained increasing importance since the outbreak of Russia’s large-scale war against Ukraine, contributing to the coordination of American military support for Kiev and the administration of the American presence on the eastern flank of NATO.

The reason for the dismissal was not made public.

The army has confirmed the removal of the general, but not the reason for it. A spokesperson for the institution stated that the circumstances remain unclear, and army representatives specified that the situation was “forwarded to the competent authority, in accordance with military regulations,” according to The Hill publication.

The available information suggests that the decision does not have political connotations. Two American officials told journalists that the dismissal was not politically motivated and was not initiated by the American Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth. One of the sources cited behavior that could justify the removal of a commander at any level, while a former defense official mentioned issues related to alcohol consumption. Brigadier General John Mountford, deputy for operational readiness, has taken over command on an interim basis.
