According to Financial Times, the US Treasury has announced a series of new sanctions against Iran, but the main novelty is what the Trump administration has not yet done: it has not started an extensive campaign against other countries and entities doing business with Iran.
Scott Bessent announced that the United States is prepared to take tougher measures against those who continue economic relations with Tehran, despite existing American sanctions.
The message was presented as a warning to Iran’s economic partners. However, Bessent did not provide a schedule for the implementation of any additional sanctions, the publication writes.
“Why would I want to blow up the global financial system?”
According to FT journalists, Bessent acknowledged the magnitude that such an operation could have.
In this context, the Treasury Secretary asked why the United States would want to “blow up the global financial system”, raising questions about how far the Trump administration is willing to go.
For the moment, Washington’s message is that countries and companies that have economic relations with Iran have the opportunity to change their behavior.
