The documents from the Kremlin and interviews with Russian officials and business leaders suggest that Russia is becoming increasingly confident that deepening economic and diplomatic ties with China and countries in the Global South will allow it to challenge the international financial system dominated by the United States and to “undermine the West,” writes The Washington Post.
The publication notes that Russia’s success in deterring the Ukrainian counter-offensive, supported by the West, has led to a political impasse in Washington and Brussels regarding the continuation of funding for Kiev. According to Moscow, the United States’ support for Israel in the war against Hamas has affected Washington’s position in many parts of the world. The coincidence of events has led to a wave of optimism regarding Russia’s global position.
“Internal documents from the Russian Security Council, obtained by European intelligence services, show that the Kremlin has convened meetings in 2022 and 2023 to discuss ways to undermine the role of the dollar as the world’s reserve currency. The ultimate goal was to dismantle the global financial system established after World War II and the power held by Washington,” journalists say.
Another document, written by a close associate of the Security Council’s president, Nikolai Patrushev, and circulated at the Kremlin last summer, called for closer cooperation between China and Russia in the fields of artificial intelligence and cyber systems.
Beijing and Moscow want to create a new financial system and a Eurasian digital currency
In this document, it was said that Beijing and Moscow plan to create a new financial system and a Eurasian digital currency based on alternative payment systems in order to circumvent Western domination in global financial transactions.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov denied that Russia is working to undermine American domination in the global financial system, but acknowledged that it is trying to create alternatives, saying that the actions of the “collective West” undermine trust without any help from Moscow.
