The US is preparing to deploy in the Middle East in the coming days at least 1,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division, an elite unit of the American army, reports The Independent. The paratroopers of the 82nd Division were also deployed 3 years ago in Romania, at the Mihail Kogălniceanu base: in December 2023, the 82nd Airborne Division of the US took command of the operations of the American troops on the southeast flank of NATO, in a deterrence action against a potential Russian aggression in the Black Sea region, according to Stars and Stripes.
The decision to send soldiers from this division was made as the war in Iran has already entered its fourth week of conflict, and the Trump administration is currently looking for solutions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, whose blockade by the Iranians, risks causing a global economic crisis.
The Pentagon has just canceled a large-scale military exercise, which was to take place at the command center of the 82nd Division, in Fort Bragg, California.
According to the New York Times, the Trump administration is considering occupying Kharg Island, Iran’s main oil “hub”, as a way to force Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
