The leaders of the European Union states intend to ask the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, to moderate his public criticisms of Donald Trump, during a closed-door meeting scheduled for October 16, in Brussels, reports FT.
According to the publication, which quotes three sources familiar with preparations for the EU summit, European leaders fear that Zelensky’s harsh statements could further deteriorate the already tense relations between the governments of Washington and Kiev.
The publication’s sources say that the statements of the Ukrainian president have surprised European politicians, and the message they intend to convey will be “understanding, but firm”.
“Perhaps what he says is true, but he doesn’t necessarily have to say it out loud“, declared one of the Financial Times’ sources.
Zelensky criticized the agreements made by Trump with Russia regarding diesel deliveries and stated that the American president sympathizes with autocratic leaders and very wealthy people.
