The authorities have begun to withdraw from public libraries the books that were added to the collections before the actual implementation of state censorship.
In Ekaterinburg, it is anticipated that about 30% of the books purchased in the 1990s will be withdrawn from library shelves, said Irina Cheremisina, the director of the city’s municipal library association.
“We are now facing changes in the legislation. Some of the books must be withdrawn from the fund, as they were purchased with money from Soros,” said Cheremisina, speaking at the municipal Duma.
According to this, libraries in other regions are also preparing to “clean” their collections. At the same time, at the same meeting, Elena Sokolova, the interim director of the culture department in Ekaterinburg, noted that there is currently a shortage of books in libraries, and the budget does not have sufficient funds to replenish them.
The billionaire George Soros’s foundation has been active in Russia since the late 1980s. Through the non-profit organizations “Open Society” and “Sodeistvie”, it has been involved in the development and support of educational programs, provided assistance to students and researchers, financed the construction of internet centers, as well as allocated funds for the printing of books and manuals.
