The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has stated that Europe should immediately lift sanctions on Russian energy to protect its economy from the effects of the war in Iran, reports The Guardian.

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, has stated that Europe should immediately lift sanctions on Russian energy, to protect its economy from the effects of the war in Iran, reports The Guardian.

The leader from Budapest, considered one of the closest allies of the Kremlin in the European Union, has criticized the current sanctions policy and called for a change of direction at the European level. In his opinion, the measures imposed on Russia affect the economies of European countries more than the Russian one.

In this context, Viktor Orban conveyed that European states should prioritize their own economic interests and internal stability.

“We must think not of Putin, but of our own country and our people. Instead of war, love and save your country, Donald,” declared the Hungarian Prime Minister.

The statement comes in response to the position of the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, who had warned that the recent actions of Orban and former American President Donald Trump resemble “the plan from Putin’s dreams”.

Orban’s positions are not new. The Hungarian government has distinguished itself in recent years through a critical attitude towards Ukraine and a close relationship with Russia, including in the context of the war between the two countries. Moreover, the press previously reported that the Hungarian foreign minister, Péter Szijjártó, would have conveyed information to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, regarding discussions within the EU Council.

On the domestic front, Viktor Orban has consolidated his anti-Ukraine rhetoric, turning this stance into a central element of the electoral campaign for the elections scheduled for April 12.
