The American President Donald Trump has reacted to the political situation in Hungary, in an interview where he addressed both the election results and the direction in which Europe is heading.

In the interview, Trump described Viktor Orbán as “a friend” and “a good man,” praising his policies in the field of immigration.

“Viktor Orban was a friend of mine. They weren’t my elections, but he was my friend, a good man. He did a good job regarding immigration. He didn’t let people come in and destroy his country, like Italy did,” Trump said in the over six-minute interview given to Corriere della Sera.

In the first US reaction following the elections in Hungary, Vice President JD Vance said he was saddened by the result, but assured that Washington will cooperate with the new government in Budapest.

“I am saddened by the fact that he lost, but I am sure that we will collaborate very well with the future Hungarian prime minister,” Vance said on Fox News.
