The Kremlin announced on Tuesday that it welcomes the fact that the German far-right party AfD wants a dialogue with Moscow, contrasting this with what it called the “conflictual position” of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, reports Reuters.
Last week, the international press agency wrote that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main economic envoy and the AfD leadership began preparations for a meeting next year, with the aim of discussing the resumption of gas deliveries from Russia to Germany.
The anti-immigration party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) took first place in two regional elections in eastern Germany this month and is leading in national opinion polls, but it is in opposition in the federal parliament, so the meeting will have no impact on the policy of the German government.
The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitri Peskov, told reporters that he does not have information regarding the alleged attempts of the AfD to establish contacts with Moscow.
“Nevertheless, as a political force in Germany – one that currently enjoys popularity, which records a constant upward trend and talks about the opportunity to establish relations with our country – this cannot fail to attract our attention“, declared the Kremlin representative.
Peskov stated that Merz, on the other hand, has only made conflicting comments about Russia. Merz’s conservatives (CDU) currently govern Germany in a coalition with the Social Democrats (SPD).
