President Donald Trump is faced with three difficult options regarding the conflict with Iran, after he cancelled peace talks and rejected a last-minute offer from Tehran, according to reports in the American press.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the leader at the White House could choose between escalating the conflict, using economic pressure — including by blocking the Strait of Hormuz — or accepting a deal that he does not consider favorable.
In statements made on Sunday, Trump asserted that Iran’s oil infrastructure could suffer major damage in just a few days. He suggested that certain pipelines could “explode from within,” without providing concrete evidence for these claims.
The tensions come at an already volatile moment. On Saturday evening, Trump was evacuated under heightened security, along with the first lady, after gunshots were reported during an official event in Washington. Despite the incident, he reiterated that his goal remains to reach an agreement with Iran.
The global economic impact is intensifying
Previously, the president had announced the cancellation of a planned trip to Pakistan, where his envoys were to participate in indirect discussions with Iranian officials. Trump cited “confusion and internal strife” within the Iranian leadership as the main reason for this decision.
The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, was nevertheless in Islamabad, where he had meetings with Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to official statements, the discussions focused on the basic conditions for potential negotiations, and Tehran reaffirmed its red lines.
Shortly after the cancellation of the visit, Trump stated that Iran had sent a new proposal, which he described as “better”, but still insufficient. The Iranian authorities have not publicly confirmed the existence of this offer.
