US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that the war with Iran had been worth the effort, though he acknowledged that the conflict had contributed to heavy losses in the US midterm elections, which saw Republicans lose control of Congress, according to Reuters, AFP and CNN.
Speaking from the construction site on Wednesday in his first public remarks since the Republican Party’s crushing defeat in the midterm elections, he also spoke at length about the new White House ballroom.
“It will be not only one of the largest but also the most beautiful ballroom, I think, in the entire world,” Trump told reporters—without initially mentioning Tuesday’s crucial elections, which saw Democrats take control of both chambers of Congress.
The White House’s state-of-the-art bunker
President Donald Trump began his first public appearance since his midterm election defeat by celebrating progress on his ambitious East Wing ballroom project—an undertaking that has occupied much of his second term and that he frequently touted to supporters on the campaign trail.
He unveiled the state-of-the-art bunker located “five floors beneath” the building, which, according to the Republican president, will be “the safest place in Washington.”
“What fascinates me most is what they’ve done beneath the building,” Trump told a group gathered at the construction site on Wednesday afternoon. He continued: “Military officials came to me and said, ‘Sir, we’ve never had this opportunity at the White House because the building is fragile. Would it be possible to go beneath the building?’ We did it, we did everything they wanted, and it’s something extraordinary.”
Trump agrees with Vance that higher prices caused by the war with Iran have hurt the Republican Party
Trump later took questions, saying he agreed with Vice President JD Vance’s assessment that the war with Iran was the reason Republicans lost the midterm elections.
“I think that’s largely true, because it led to a slight increase in gas prices in the short term,” Trump said when asked about Vance’s statement. “At the same time, if I had to do it all over again, I would, because in the long run, it’s the only solution”, Trump continued. “You have no choice. You have to do it. You cannot allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon.”
The president explained that he had believed the decision to launch the conflict was inevitable. “I thought oil prices would rise much more,” Trump said.
The White House leader once again insisted that, had he been on the ballot, Republicans would have won the elections—instead of losing to Democrats in many states by unprecedented, overwhelming margins.
