American President Donald Trump wrote on Wednesday, in a post on his Truth Social platform, that his Iranian counterpart has requested a ceasefire, but the US will only accept it on the condition of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, according to international press agencies.
“Trump’s statements regarding a ceasefire request from Iran are false and lack any foundation“, declared the spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmail Baghaei, quoted by the state press in Tehran.
Trump stated, ahead of an anticipated speech on Wednesday, that the leaders of Iran have requested a ceasefire, referring in his message to the “president of the new regime in Iran”, despite the fact that there is no confirmed change in the country’s leadership. He added that any cessation of hostilities depends on one thing: that this crucial maritime route be “open, free, and secure”.
“The President of the New Regime in Iran, far less Radicalized and much smarter than his predecessors, has just asked the United States of America for an ARMISTICE! We will consider it when the Strait of Hormuz is open, free and unobstructed. Until then, we throw Iran into nonexistence, or as they say, back to the Stone Age!!! President DJT,” wrote the American president.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in an interview given to Al Jazeera and broadcasted Tuesday evening, hinted that Iran has no intention of backing down and will continue to fight.
“You cannot speak to the Iranian people in the language of threats and ultimatums,” he said. “We do not set deadlines to defend ourselves.“
The contradictory statements highlight the uncertainty surrounding the ongoing conflict, while both sides convey harsh public messages but leave open the possibility of negotiations. Trump’s most recent comments seem to mark a shift from previous suggestions that he could end the war without reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for global oil transport.
