The Atlantic publication writes that Trump hopes to achieve a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia at the G20 summit in Miami.
According to the advisors of the US president, quoted by The Atlantic, Trump imagines himself standing between the Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, at the moment they sign a peace agreement, even if this will require exerting pressure on Ukraine.
He intends to invite Putin, who has not yet confirmed his participation. If the Russian leader were to come, it would be his first participation in a multilateral summit in a Western country since the invasion of Ukraine.
Zelenski confirmed his participation at the summit and declared himself ready to negotiate directly with Putin.
However, the publication warns that Trump’s rush to secure a deal by December could lead to pressuring Ukraine to accept Moscow’s conditions, instead of a fair negotiation.
This week, the American administration has postponed the approval of the transfer of some missiles that Ukraine needs for defense.
At the same time, many Republicans criticized the concessions made and his attempt to weaken sanctions against Moscow.
According to Michael Froman, who worked in the Clinton and Obama administrations, the interruption of military aid and information exchange could prolong the war, weakening Ukraine’s position in negotiations. Until the new Congress is installed on January 3, Trump will have about two more months to exert pressure on Kiev without the constraints of a new parliamentary majority.
“He could turn his attention elsewhere at any time. But, at this moment, he is furious with Ukraine and wants Zelenski to leave,” declared an ally of Trump’s from outside the administration.
