Conservative political commentator Tucker Carlson, a former fervent supporter of Donald Trump, has called for the President of the United States to be removed from office under the 25th Amendment of the Constitution. Carlson made this statement on Thursday, during an interview given to NPR’s “Newsmakers” podcast.
Although Carlson has long been a public supporter of Trump, he has been particularly critical of the president’s war against Iran, writes The Independent.
“He will not be punished for this. They will catch him for corruption or something else,” Carlson declared for NPR when asked if Trump should be the subject of an impeachment procedure because of the war.
He asserted that Trump should have been removed from office “by his own cabinet secretaries at the moment he threatened with a nuclear attack”.
Steve Inskeep from NPR asked Carlson if he was referring to the application of the 25th amendment.
“Exactly. He should have been tied up and removed from office. This is a crime. There is no crime more serious than this”, Carlson said.
The former Fox News presenter, however, left room for a conspiracy theory – namely, that perhaps Trump was not the one who ultimately made the decision to join Israel in its attack on Iran.
“I don’t believe he had the freedom to make this decision on his own,” said Carlson.
There are no credible evidences to suggest that anyone other than Trump would have led the United States in the current deadlock with Tehran. The 25th amendment gives the vice president and the secretaries of state the power to remove a president who cannot fulfill his duties or who acts in direct violation of these duties.
