Donald Tusk and his government accuse the Polish president, Karol Nawrocki, who comes from the ranks of the reactionary PiS, of making a strategic mistake after he withdrew from the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, the most prestigious decoration of Poland: The Order of the White Eagle, reports Politico.

Nawrocki withdrew the distinction on Friday evening, in protest against the name given last month to a Ukrainian military unit, after an organization from the period of the Second World War that massacred tens of thousands of Poles.

For the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the priority is to maintain Poland’s role at the forefront of support given to Ukraine in the fight against their common enemy: Russia. The close ties between Poland and Ukraine have increased Poland’s diplomatic influence since the outbreak of the war, in 2022, and have placed Polish investors in a favorable position to participate in the reconstruction of Ukraine.

The extent of the diplomatic consequences became clear after Zelenski decided not to participate in the Conference for the Reconstruction of Ukraine, organized this week in the Polish city of Gdansk. Tusk had presented the conference as an opportunity to “take stock of the first concrete results of our Polish-Ukrainian cooperation”.
